Assam spreads along the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys in the Northeast. It has a humid subtropical climate with a long, very wet rainy season, warm summers and cool, foggy winters.
Pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms start in March–April, and the monsoon proper lasts from June to September. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries flood large parts of the state almost every year.
Summers are warm and humid rather than extreme, with highs in the low-to-mid 30s °C. Winters (December–February) are dry and cool, with foggy mornings and nights around 8–12 °C.
