Rajasthan is India's largest state and home to the Thar Desert. It has the country's most extreme temperatures: scorching summers, a short and irregular monsoon, and sunny winters with cold nights.
The monsoon reaches eastern Rajasthan in late June and the west in early July, and withdraws from mid-September. The east (Kota, Udaipur) gets moderate rain; the west (Jaisalmer, Bikaner) gets very little.
From April to June, highs of 45 °C or more are common in the desert, with dust storms. In winter, days are sunny and pleasant but desert nights can fall to around 5 °C.
